I. INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the first issue of Digital North News (DNN). The purpose of this mailing is to provide our customers with updated service reports and service upgrades. We plan to mail out Digital North News every couple weeks.

We strongly recommend that at least one person from your organization subscribe to the DNN mailing. The mailing will typically include important information about your services.

If any additional members of your organization would like to subscribe to the DNN mailing list they can send an email message to:

clients-on@digitalnorth.net

Thank you for reading the Digital North News mailing. Please let us know if we can do anything to improve our communications.

II. URCHIN -- OUR NEW WEB LOG REPORTING SYSTEM

We successfully installed our new Urchin website log reporting system two weeks ago. We have been diligently working to automate the system over the past two weeks. I am pleased to announce that the system is fully operational.

Urchin is a leading website reporting system developed by Quantified Systems (www.urchin.com). Urchin provides fast, reliable, and comprehensive reporting. I especially like the simple, straight-forward reports that the Urchin system provides. You can use Urchin reports to determine how many people are visiting your website, what pages they are looking at, and how they are finding your site.

We setup the Urchin system to update your website report on a daily basis. Urchin processes your website traffic at 2am each morning.

You can view your Urchin website reports at:

http://www.websitelogs.com/yourdomain.com

(where yourdomain.com is your website domain -- for example, the reports for www.digitalnorth.net are at www.websitelogs/digitalnorth.net)

We have implemented security protection on your website reports so that the public cannot view your confidential information. You will need a username and a password to access your report. You can use your existing Web Account (used for ftp access) to access your report. I will email your Web Account information to you in the next 24 hours.

Digital North will also announce a new customized reporting service in the next couple weeks. We will generate customized reports which include strategic analysis. Our business analysis will help make the reports more meaningful to your organization. The customized reporting service will be available for a small monthly fee. Please contact Mike Sowada (msowada@digitalnorth.net) if you are interested in learning more about this new service.

III. Client Key Contact List

We are reviewing and updating all client documentation over the next couple weeks. I will be sending out "Key Contact Forms" for you to fill out in the next 24 hours. The key contact forms will specify the business, technical, and billing contacts within your organization. This important information helps us communicate with you better. The form will only take about 5 minutes to fill out. Please fill out the form and email or fax it back to me. I will contact you next week if I do not receive a form back.

IV. Just In Time

We have recently implemented a Time Server within the Digital North hosting network. No, this is not a device that allows us to go back-in-time (although that would be nice for solving problems). The Time Server allows us to synchronize the digital clocks on all of the computer systems within our network. The Time Server uses a protocol called Network Time Protocol (NTP) to synchronize our clocks with the US atomic clocks.

Why is it important to synchronize all of the computer clocks? Because when computer systems exchange information they sometimes rely upon scheduled times to perform various tasks. Even a difference of 5 minutes can cause unexpected problems. The Time Server ensures that the clocks on our computer systems are never more than a few milliseconds apart. And, our servers are stepping in time with the rest of the world.

Please let us know if you would like additional technical information regarding our network time server service.
